Purpose, Spiritual Needs 1 COMMENTS June 30, 2011
Recently, we’ve received several inquiries from people struggling with how to define their purpose. They explain that despite their strong desire and the time they’ve spent thinking about it, they find themselves still struggling. Ironically, it is often when we are not thinking that the deeper connections to the best parts of ourselves appear unbidden.

Recently, I have been reacquainted with just how strong our need for connection is. It is one of the most powerful driver’s of performance and well-being. From an evolutionary perspective, we need to be connected to other people in order to ensure our survival. We are social animals that have a powerful, primal instinct that fuels the feeling that connection is safe and disconnection or alienation is dangerous. Because this is a primitive instinct we may not always give it a great deal of conscious thought, despite the fact that it influences everything we do and feel.

If you’re a parent, imagine a day when your three-year-old attends a birthday party after missing his nap.  As the afternoon progresses he becomes increasingly irritable, so tired he can’t even focus long enough to eat his lunch. While playing, he gets more and more frustrated while trying to stack his blocks, instantly dissolving into tears when they fall. When you attempt to soothe him, he can’t take in your words because he’s too tired and depleted to process what you’re saying.

Emotional Needs, Energy Coach 1 COMMENTS February 14, 2011
I recently saw the movie, “Invictus,” with Morgan Freeman portraying Nelson Mandela. I loved the film overall, but what most moved me was the way that the character of Nelson Mandela treated people. We all are familiar with his super human efforts to promote peace, racial equality, and unity, as well as his huge capacity for forgiveness. However, it was something much more subtle that inspired me to create a ritual after watching the film.

I had a coaching conversation last week with an executive from a large bank, Brad, who shared with me the rituals he has recently implemented. He chose a particularly unique one that has had such a dramatic impact on his energy and the quality of his life that I thought it was worth sharing.Ritual:Brad decided that he was going to completely separate his work communication from his personal communication. In order to accomplish this, his first action step before implementing his ritual was to purchase a second blackberry solely for personal use.
