Thoughts and ideas about transforming the way the world works

Why are you here? It's arguably life's most important question, but is it one you ask yourself?I recognize it's a question some people might view as self-indulgent, while others would see it primarily through a religious lens. But is there any part of an answer we could all agree on?I've found a very simple one for myself, and it's provided me in recent years with an increasingly powerful sense of clarity, inspiration and even joy. It's this: I'm here to add more value to the world than I'm using up.

I can't ever remember living through such poisonously polarized times: the left and the right, immigrants and their antagonists, warring religions, and perhaps above all, the haves, who have ever more, and the have nots, who have ever less. As William Yeats put it, "Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." Doesn't it increasingly feel that way?

Recently, we’ve received several inquiries from people struggling with how to definetheir purpose. They explain thatdespite their strong desire and the time they’ve spent thinking about it, they find themselves still struggling. Ironically, it is often when we are not thinking that the deeper connections to the best parts of ourselves appear unbidden.

Recently, I was talking about spiritual energy with Audrey, one of my coaching clients. Two of her deepest values were “safety” and “honesty”. She felt that she was not living these values as fully as she could when she engaged in office gossip, or complaining to co-workers about others’ behavior. She implemented a ritual that targeted living her values more fully. She decided to try and stop talking negatively about people behind their backs.

“Do you feel passionately committed to what you do?” This is one of the questions on The Energy Audit, a 20-question quiz that we give to all of our clients to determine how well they’re managing their energy. The question sparked an interesting and heartfelt discussion during a session I facilitated this week. One young woman in this session has been so successful in her company that she has been identified as a “high potential “and has been placed on a special track for future leaders. After taking The Energy Audit, she immediately raised her hand.
