I recently saw the movie, “Invictus,” with Morgan Freeman portraying Nelson Mandela. I loved the film overall, but what most moved me was the way that the character of Nelson Mandela treated people. We all are familiar with his super human efforts to promote peace, racial equality, and unity, as well as his huge capacity for forgiveness. However, it was something much more subtle that inspired me to create a ritual after watching the film.

It’s flu season, and we’re all too familiar with how quickly we can transmit germs with a simple sneeze or a handshake. The same is true with emotions. If you have any doubt that this is true, imagine walking into a Department of Motor Vehicles on a day when you are feeling good? Would it change your mood at all? It doesn’t take long to be infected with the emotional energy of our surroundings, for better and for worse.

David and I met at a networking lunch a few weeks ago.  When he learned about our work at The Energy Project, he began to talk about the structure of his meetings. As the head of a business unit responsible for marketing and distributing auto parts in the US and Canada, David had twice monthly meetings with a team of approximately 20 people. The Rationalization: I’m on the road at least a couple of days every week flying to client events, meetings, or conferences. It is part of the job and I take it in stride.  There are benefits to the travel—seeing different parts of the country, eating local foods, and developing a sense of confidence in finding my way around.
