The Diagnosis: My guess is that my workdays aren’t much different than yours.  I’m booked solid with meetings, conference calls, tasks that are tied to tight deadlines as well as the never-ending influx of emails that require my attention.  I’m often not sure how to respond when my husband, Paul, asks me at dinner how my day was.  I know I was extremely busy, but I didn’t do any strategic thinking or serious problem solving. In fact, I’m not sure that I substantially moved the ball forward in any particular area. On the days that I express that frustration, Paul asks, “Could you go for a bike ride tomorrow?”

Earlier this summer, I ran into one of my neighbors, Tim, a software engineer, at a weekend arts and music festival.  Having found a shady spot to sit while the band took a break, he mentioned that he had seen me riding my bicycle several times from his desk in his home office. I explained that exercise is extremely important to me and I make sure that it is a consistent part of my life. The Rationalization: “It used to be a big part of my life, too,” Tim told me, “but with my job and my family, I just don’t have time for it anymore.”

How many hours a day do you spend sitting each day? Do you find it laughable to think that you could squeeze in time for a workout routine? You’re not alone.Almost all of us struggle to find time to exercise. Yet all of us know we should. We’ve heard about the studies that show how spending the majority of the day sitting makes us more vulnerable to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, multiple forms of cancer, and early death. Lesser known is that too much sitting can also interfere with our mood, ability to focus, and our productivity.
