Energy Saver: Gratitude Journal Mobile App

Since the Energy Savers so far have focused almost exclusively on physical and mental energy, this week’s suggestion will help fuel your emotional energy.

Do you sometimes find yourself feeling anxious, irritable, and frustrated during the day, especially when demand is high?

If you answered no, then you are in a very small minority. And why should this come as a surprise?

When our cars start to run out of gas, we hurry to the gas station to refill. Our personal energy is literally the fuel in our tanks, so understandably, we need to find our own equivalent to the gas station.

While physical energy is the foundation, emotions are what dictate the quality of that energy. To perform sustainably at our best, we need to learn how to intentionally cultivate positive emotions, in order to keep from reactively falling into negative feelings and behaviors.

Gratitude Journal is a very simple mobile app that allows you to keep track of what you are grateful for throughout the day. While this may seem rudimentary, the fact is that experiencing gratitude is not only rare, but also a wonderful form of emotional renewal.

The app asks you to write down five things each day for which you are grateful. You can do this all at once, or throughout the day as the mood strikes.

I suggest setting specific times during the day when you take a minute or two to think about what you are grateful for and type it into the journal. It’s a quick, easy way to take a step back from the urgent and the reactive, and think about what’s going right in your life.

The best part is that once you type it in, you have it there for when you are feeling really down and can't think of any responses. All you need to do is look back, and re-experience all the gratitude that you've had in the previous days (or weeks).

Try it out and let me know it goes!
