take back your life challenge
Each month, we will share expertise around ten simple practices featured in Tony Schwartz' blog, "Take Back Your Life in Ten Steps," on HBR.org that will help you feel better and more in charge of your life. We recommend adding each of these steps one at a time to set yourself up for success. Sign up for the whole series to get Tony’s specific suggestions on how to build that behavior into your life. Keep us posted on your progress and success on Facebook and Twitter.
step 1 - sleep
Tuesday, February 12 at 1:00pm ET
Sleep is the most fundamental and undervalued behavior that influences great performance. Very few of us get enough – not least because we buy into the pervasive myth that an hour less of sleep provides an extra hour more of productivity. In fact, numerous studies of great performers suggest that they sleep more than the rest of us, not less. In this webinar, Tony Schwartz will discuss the keys to getting a good night’s sleep, including:
• Why sleep is essential to our productivity
• How to adjust your schedule so that you can fit in the essential 7-8 hours of sleep

In lives that seem to becoming more sedentary, now more than ever, we need to maintain our health through physical activity and renewal. In this webinar, Tony Schwartz will discuss how to become more physically active in a sustainable way, including:
• How physical activity affects all dimensions of energy
• What types of physical activity you should focus on adding to your routine

step 3 - food fuels energy: what, when, and how much to eat
Thursday, April 25 at 1:00pm ET (previously scheduled for April 23)
Our goal is to fuel our bodies rather than just filling our bodies. By making smart choices about how and when we eat, we are actively feeding our internal furnace to drive energy. In this webinar, Tony Schwartz will discuss how to make the most of what you eat, including:
• When and what we should eat to produce the maximum amount of energy
• How to integrate these new eating habits into your life

step 4 - relax! you'll be more productive: getting more done by doing less
Thursday, May 16 at 1:00pm ET (previously scheduled for May 7)
Human beings aren't meant to operate like computers: at high speeds, continuously, for long periods of time. Rather, we're hard-wired to be rhythmic. We're at our best when we pulse between spending and renewing energy. Unfortunately, the need for rest and renewal gets little respect in most organizations. The result is that employees at all levels increasingly find themselves working at a pace that feels unsustainable. We're in an energy crisis - and this one is personal. In this webinar, The Energy Project's Emily Pines will share principles and practices that can help you and your organization learn:
• What the research tells us about how frequently human beings need renewal over the course of the day, and for how long.
• The best ways to get effective renewal in short periods of time.
• Which kinds of organizational policies and practices can ease the relentless pressure for instant response, which necessarily takes a toll on people's energy and effectiveness over the course of the day.
• How to shift from operating like marathoners at work - forever conserving energy - to running instead like sprinters - alternating intense periods of energy expenditure with intermittent periods of deep rest.

step 5 - the heart of the matter: how connection drives excellence
Thursday, June 13 at 1:00pm ET (previously scheduled for June 12)
In a world where we are trying to do more in less time, the lines are blurred between work and home. Unfortunately, our loved ones fall victim in our attempts to be connected to work when we’ve clearly left the office. By prioritizing the people we hold dear, we reinforce their feelings of value. In turn, this allows us to have more meaningful relationships. In this webinar, Emily Pines will discuss how to be fully present to help fuel your emotional and spiritual energy, and how to create good habits that foster loving and lasting relationships.

step 6 - the art of gratitude: how appreciation creates value
Thursday, July 11 at 1:00pm ET
The single highest driver of engagement in the workplace is whether or not employees believe their managers genuinely care about them. Feeling appreciated lifts us up and makes us feel safe, which frees us to do our best work. This webinar will address why feeling valued matters so much at work, how to more skillfully bring the language of positive emotion into the workplace, and what you need to do to more fully value yourself and others.

step 7 - do the most important thing first: prioritizing what really matters
Thursday, September 12 at 1:00pm ET
The act of prioritizing – focusing on what adds the greatest value– doesn’t come to us naturally. It requires both awareness and intentionality. At a practical level, it means setting aside regular time to reflect on and define priorities, rather than simply plunging into the next task that comes to mind or reacting to the next request that flashes up on your computer screen. In this webinar, Emily Pines will discuss the importance of doing the most important thing first, and how strategically planning your day will give you more energy and save you time.

step 8 - from reacting to reflecting: whatever you feel compelled to do, don't
Tuesday, October 8 at 1:00pm ET
Neither the culture at large, nor the organizations for which we work, gives us much support for looking at our inner life. Science, however, has now revealed a great deal about what's actually going on inside us and how it influences our effectiveness. This webinar will address how to understand and better manage our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual lives. The more you know about yourself, the more tools you have at your disposal and the more effective you become. In this webinar, Emily Pines will share key insights around:
• How to track and influence your mood in order to make better choices at the right times.
• Why understanding and even embracing your limitations and shortcomings allows you to manage yourself more skillfully.
• How cultivating your inner “observer” gives you greater perspective and composure.
• How to use self-awareness in the service of more effectiveness as a leader.
• How to add reflection to your daily routine.

step 9 - why you need to learn something new every day: if you're not getting stronger, you're getting weaker
Wednesday, November 13 at 1:00pm ET
Similarly to how we exercise our bodies, we need to exercise our brains through continual learning. By constantly challenging ourselves we are extending our ability to perform. In this webinar, Emily Pines will discuss the importance of continual learning, how to balance your learning among your left and right brain hemispheres, and how to create a regular practice around your new challenge.

step 10 - it's not just about you: how to balance self-care with care for others
Tuesday, December 10 at 1:00pm ET
We’re all in this together and our choices affect the commons. To the extent that we're not part of the solution, we're unavoidably and increasingly part of the problem. So how can we aim higher? In this webinar, Emily Pines will discuss how to successfully marshal the advantages we’ve been given and the skills we’ve developed to add more value to the world.
